Some Hints on Juicing:
3. Always juice soft or leafy vegetables first, then follow with the harder ones such as carrots and apples. The same holds true for small pieces of fruit, vegetables, or herbs such as ginger root—juice them first. Then force the harder fruits and vegetables through. This will propel them through the juicer allowing them to be completely ground up.
You will notice that I include ginger root in a number of the juice recipes. As mentioned previously, ginger root is a great natural stimulant. It gets the blood flowing. It is also a stomach soother and makes many of these recipes more digestible. Here is a list of fruit and vegetables used in the juice recipes included in this book along with a description of their benefit.
A Special Note To Diabetics: If you suffer from diabetes, you may want to restrict the number of carrots and beets that you juice, since they are relatively high in sugar content.

Dealing With Asthma
Asthma (AZ-ma) is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning.
Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts during childhood. I can remember having asthma attacks when I was a child. I can remember the shortness of breath, the coughing and the wheezing. I hated it. My parents would give me something called Primatene in tablet form. I understand that this over-the-counter remedy is still available. The good news for me was that I outgrew asthma. The bad news is that millions of people do not outgrow it.
According to the National Institutes of Health over 25 million people in this country suffer from asthma. Almost one-third of those people are children. In fact, one of my nephews has been dealing with that disease since he was a child. He is a twin, yet his brother does not suffer this illness. Asthma symptoms sometimes are mild and go away on their own. Other times, the symptoms continue to get worse.
What Causes Asthma
Conventional medicine does not know the cause of asthma and says there is no cure. However, some herbalists, many naturopathic doctors, and even medical researchers believe that asthma is a disease caused by malnutrition or malabsorption of nutrients which can lead to malnutrition. Specific deficiencies include low levels these nutrients: manganese, magnesium, vitamin D, and essential fatty acids. A recent research study showed that African American children with asthma almost always had a deficiency of Vitamin D. According to Dr. Mercola: "If vitamin D is indeed a major underlying cause of asthma, which it surely appears to be, many are needlessly suffering with a potentially life threatening ailment since vitamin D deficiency is easily remedied. Not to mention the fact that many are needlessly exposing themselves to the dangers inherent with the standard drug treatments for asthma.
Advair, for example, contains the long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) salmeterol. A 2006 analysis found that regular use of LABAs can increase the severity of an asthma attack. Researchers estimate that salmeterol may contribute to as many as 5,000 asthma-related deaths in the United States each year. Conventional asthma treatments can also increase your risk of heart disease and osteoporosis, just to name a few."
Low levels of magnesium intake are also an important factor in asthma. One study of the pulmonary function in patients with asthma showed that by supplementing patients with 340 mg of magnesium per day the quality of life showed objective improvement. And the thing is, the true recommended daily intake of magnesium should be around 600 milligrams. Most people cannot handle more than 250 milligrams of supplemental magnesium without taking a trip to the bathroom. That's because magnesium is very laxative in nature. However there are ways to get more of this vital mineral without the laxative effects.
A Protocol For Asthma
If I suffered from asthma, here is what I think or believe I would do:
First I would dramatically increase my serum levels of Vitamin D by supplementing with Vitamin D3 (this is the best supplemental form of Vitamin D). Nutrients like Vitamin D are dosed based on body weight. Here is a chart below that provides dosing information. You can take up to 1,000 units per pound of body weight of Vitamin D all in one dose, every day for three days. So for example, if you weigh 150 pounds you would take a 150,000 IU dose for 3 days. If you are concerned about the toxicity of mega doses of vitamin D, the Merck Manual says that in order to produce toxicity; you would need to consume 50,000 IUs a day for several months in order to produce toxicity. So taking mega doses over just 3 days should be very safe. In fact, there is one guy (Jeff T Bowles) who wrote a book about how he took up to 100,000 IUs of Vitamin D a day with few only minor side effects.
After the first 3 days at this dosage, I would follow the chart below.
Recommended daily amount suggested by Dr. Joseph Mercola's:
10,000 units per day for a 300 pound person
5,000 units per day for a 150 pound person
4,000 units per day for a 100 pound person
2,000 units per day for a large child
1,000 units per day for a small child
Doctor Mercola also recommends taking Vitamin K with Vitamin D. See this article: articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/03/26/the-delicate-dance-between-vitamins-d-and-k.aspx
Now in addition to Vitamin D I would increase my levels of magnesium. Pumpkin seeds and squash seeds have some of the highest values of magnesium around. A half cup of these seeds contain around 380 milligrams of magnesium. Spinach is also high in magnesium. So you can juice it. In addition to getting magnesium orally, you can massage magnesium oil all over your body each day. I have written several articles about magnesium oil on this site. Just use the search function on this blog to look them up. Also I would drink at least one glass of bicarbonate sodium and water. 1 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate to 8 ounces of water. Sodium bicarbonate drives magnesium into our cells. See this important article by Dr. Mark Sircus.
Next, I would buy me a few bottles of colloidal minerals. And drink two ounces a day. This would insure my getting sufficient manganese and other essential minerals. You can order colloidal minerals online from youngevity.net and from Swanson's Vitamins. Youngevity's product has more minerals, but I order from both places.
And of course we cannot forget about vegetable juicing. It would be a part of my mix. I would juice at least 16 ounces of green vegetables 3-5 times a week. As I mentioned, spinach would be a central component of my juice recipe.
Finally in order to get the essential fatty acids my body needs, I would eat 3 tablespoons of chia seeds a day. They are the highest food source of omega-3 fatty acids around, higher even than flaxseeds. You can sprinkle them on your food and eat up. You can order them online from places like Amazon.com. Evening primrose oil is also another good source of omega-3 fatty acids.
Oh, one more thing. Since asthma seems to be a disease of malabsorption, I would work to repair my intestines. One of the main jobs of the intestines is to absorb nutrients from the food we eat. So 2 tablespoons of slippery elm would also be a part of my regimen. See my previous article about slippery elm.
So there you have it. I would try this program for a month and see if I did not get better.
No doubt one of the most important things you will need during chaotic times will be fully stocked first aid kits. And when I say kits, I do mean plural. Because you will need several. Of course you will need one for your place of residence. But also you will need kits for your vehicles and then you will need what I call a mobile kit that you can carry in your backpack or bug-out bag.
You will need multiple kits because you never know where an accident may occur. Accidents happen. And they can happen anywhere. It could be you or someone else that may need immediate medical attention.
While I personally have a medical kit in our home, I also will need to put together other kits for all the reasons I have mentioned above. I have been putting this off for much too long. And more than likely so have you. Immediate medical care can not only minimize or eliminate a crisis, but may save lives. Perhaps even yours. That's right, the life you save may be your own.
Accidents don't make an appointment. They can occur any time. Why just the other day my daughter called me almost in tears because of the pain of a severe burn she received while cooking. She did not know what to do to stop the pain. I first calmed her down and told her repeatedly to get some ice and put that on immediately. However she would not hear me initially because she was focused on her pain and trying to locate some aloe vera. Finally, I had to take control of the conversation and tell her to get her hand into some ice immediately.
Now part of her inaction was my fault. That's because the first question I asked her when she called was whether she had aloe vera in the house. And then I brought up the ice. Now get this next part of the lesson because it is very important. When someone is in pain or in an accident, the first thing to do is to calm them down. And if you are not on the scene with them--KIS, keep it simple.
The first thing I should have done after calming her down was to tell her to put her hand into some ice water in order to take the heat and the pain out of the burn. Only after doing this should I have brought up aloe vera. Sequence or order during emergencies is very important, especially when the patient is excited. So as you learn how to tackle emergencies be sure not to put the cart before the horse. In this case, the patient did not even have any aloe vera. But she did have ice which is the most crucial thing for burns and blunt force trauma. After applying ice, she was able to apply honey to the burn and make a bandage.
I have written about first aid kits before but I wanted to provide a little more detail so that you will have a better idea of what is needed in your kit. I have located several videos that do a better job of explaining visually what is needed during a medical emergency. These videos show the use of natural medicine that can be used during a medical crisis. These videos were made by a recognized herbalist and doctor. I do not know how long these videos will stay up on his website but please if you can download them to a dvd for reference do so.
Let me warn you that in many of these videos Dr. Schulze will be offering his own products for purchase. It's up to you whether you want to buy them or not. I have purchased many of his products and can tell you that they are of high quality. However, also be aware that you can make many of these products yourself such as cayenne tincture, lobelia tincture, Echinacea tincture etc. I often buy tinctures myself if I don't have the time to make them or if I have difficulty getting the herbs I need for a tincture. For example, let's say a herbal tonic calls for 10 different herbs. Well it may be cheaper and more efficient for me to just buy the ready made herbal tonic. So you will need to be the judge.
Here are the list of links you want to check out:
A few other emergency items that you want to include in your kit are:
1.Epsom salts--great for acute indigestion.
2.Baking soda--good for things like colds and the flu. See this link.
3.Sodium thiosulfate --is a potent antidote for chlorine bleach. It can also treat ringworm. Available from www.chemistrystore.com
4.Activated charcoal—good for drug overdose and other poisons.
5.Lobelia—a great herbal emetic in case you need to induce vomiting. Available from pacificbotanicals.com
6.CELOX—will stop the bleeding of veins and arteries. Available on amazon.com
7. Supertonic--applied topically for insect bites, stings, cuts and bruises.
8. Anti-diarrhea medicine to prevent dehydration from excessive bowel elimination. Note: mild diarrhea is a good thing as it helps our bodies to eliminate harmful toxins. However, prolonged severe diarrhea is serious.
One Of The Most Important Survival Herbs You Have Probably Never Heard Of
I want to discuss a tree that provides one of the top herbs in the plant kingdom in terms of survival medicine. It's called the slippery elm tree. Other common names for this tree are Red Elm, Gray Elm, Soft Elm, Moose Elm, and Indian Elm. Slippery elm is a nutritious supplement that you don't want to be without when the system falls. This tree is so common in the South and in areas east of the Mississippi River, that you probably have one growing near you. If you do have one growing nearby that you can access then you can harvest the inner bark from it for your own use.
Slippery elm has a multitude of uses and benefits. It is primarily used for things like indigestion, colitis, gastritis, Crohns disease, and to ease the symptoms of diverticulitis. It can also be used for intestinal ulcers, coughs and sore throats, diarrhea, and dryness of the respiratory tract. In addition, it can be used effectively in the young and old to treat emaciation or for any illness that destroys a person's appetite.
For example, if someone has the flu and is vomiting and cannot eat anything then you should consider slippery elm. Or, let’s say you know someone who has been poisoned by chemotherapy and cannot eat, slippery elm can be a real life saver. Most people can eat this herb when they cannot tolerate nothing else (i.e., they are nauseous or vomiting). So if you have someone who cannot hold down food or water, 9 times out of 10 they will be able to handle slippery elm. Lastly, slippery elm can be used externally as a wound healer for cuts, sores and ulcers. (Here is a link to a good article that discusses the healing properties of slippery elm.)
And get this, slippery elm is a nutritious herb all by itself. So let’s say you cannot find or grow food. You could eat slippery elm in the form of a gruel (porridge) using warm water, a little honey and cinnamon and you would have a very nutritious meal. Not only will it fill you up but it contains vitamins and minerals to boot. I have used slippery to combat colitis and gastritis along with diverticulitis. About 12 years ago, I developed a severe bout of gastritis and colitis. I couldn't eat anything. Everything I tried to eat made my stomach burn and made me quite nauseous. The medicine that the doctors gave me did not work. Then I remembered something that I had read about an herb called slippery elm. I pulled out my herb dictionary to read more about it. I tried it and it worked magnificently. After taking a couple of doses over an 8 hour period I was able to eat dinner that same day with no problem. And I still use this herb today.
Danger, Danger Will Robinson!
Now I must warn you. The popularity of this herb is growing so much so that people are starting to poach the tree bark of the slippery elm, which ends up killing the tree. Slippery elm bark can easily be harvested without killing the tree. Simply cut off some branches and strip away the bark. The underside of the bark is what you want. Note: If you strip away bark from around the trunk of a tree (called girdling) you will severely harm or kill the tree. If you harvest bark from the branches or small sections of the trunk of the tree, the bark can grow back. And of course if you harvest from the branches the branches can grow back. However, the poachers could care less about killing the tree, they just want to make a fast buck.
How To Use It
I usually make a gruel of slippery elm using very warm water and about a tablespoon of the slippery elm powder. To that I add a little honey and a few pinches of cinnamon powder. However, if you do not have any of these other things just make the slippery elm gruel with warm water. Slippery elm is very mucilaginous so after you drink it down, you will want to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Now if you have someone who is very ill, you may want to give them the standard dose of the herb which is 4 to 6 tablespoons of slippery elm. Add enough warm water to get the consistency you want. Add honey and cinnamon to taste. You don't want to make it too thick like a paste nor do you want it too watery. For external use you can make a thick paste using slippery elm, comfrey root, Echinacea root powder and a little goldenseal powder. According to herbalists, this paste will heal just about anything: cuts, burns, tears, broken bones. Once you apply the paste, just slather it on the affected area and place a bandage on it
A word to the Wise
When people truly find out the value of this tree they are going to want it. Not just for medicinal purposes but for food and nutrition. So get you some of this wonder herb while it is still available. It can last a long time stored as a powder in a cool, dry place. I order mine from Pacific Botanicals. Get is while it lasts. If you have access to the tree itself you can harvest your own.
Here are some must-see videos on slippery elm:
Stoned: Oh, What A Feeling!
If you have never suffered from kidney stones, count yourself blessed. It is some of the worse pain you could ever suffer. Some say it is the closest thing to the pain of childbirth that one can experience. Others say the pain is even worse than birth pangs. I can tell you from experience that it felt like someone rammed a sharp dagger between the ribs of my back. The pain was not just excruciating but immobilizing. Then there is the nausea and vomiting (and at least for me) internal bleeding. When one of my brothers developed kidney stones, the pain was so agonizing it overpowered to the point that he blacked out.
On a drive down to the TEAM facilities in North Carolina this past December, I told one of the brothers and his wife who graciously taxied me to the facility that if I suffered a kidney stone during the time of the collapse of this system, I could die. They seemed shocked, however it is true. A large stone, over 5 mm can stop the flow of urine and cause it to back up into my kidney. This could cause infection and an abscess which could kill if the stone could not be removed.
Now if you have never experienced a kidney stone you may be saying, “This is interesting, but what does it mean to me?” Well it may mean a lot. Why? Because you may have kidney stones and not even know it. In fact, doctors are seeing more and more patients who have stones that are what they call asymptomatic. That means the patient shows no normal signs of having a kidney stone—yet.
But the “yet” becomes the pivotal question. If you have kidney stones, they may be very small (less than 5 millimeters) but may be growing. Many times you will not even know you have a stone until it gets larger than 5 mm. Then, one fateful day, you may be just walking along, or driving, or laying in bed when all of a sudden—bam! It hits you like a ton of bricks without warning. It may begin with nausea, vomiting and a very sharp pain in the back and abdomen that radiates into the genitals. And then it gets progressively, monstrously more painful. You double over in gut-wrenching pain.
Why Are Kidney Stones So Painful?
Here is the scientific reason for the pain:
“What it does is, it [kidney stone] blocks the flow of urine in the kidney, and it causes backup. And it's an excruciating pain. A lot of people do describe it as worse than childbirth. When the system is trying to push urine out, what happens is: your kidney and your ureter -- they have this muscle propagation that goes down the kidney into the ureter -- when it's trying to push and the stone is blocking it, you get these intense pains. That's why we call it colicky, it comes and goes and it's extremely painful and the main reason for the pain is the backup of urine.
The backup is like that. It causes a great deal of pain because you're expanding your system. You don't have any pop-off valve. Once it starts expanding, it's expanding unnaturally. There are certain diseases associated with kidney stones, things like hypoparathyroidism, or some bowel diseases where your absorption isn't normal.
Things like obesity and diabetes are associated with kidney stones. The main dietary factors are low water intake and high salt intake and animal protein -- anything you killed to eat. If you have high amounts of those intakes, it causes your urine to acidify and then it becomes more prone to having stones.” 1
Calcium and Kidney Stones
The vast majority of kidney stones are the result of the intake of too much calcium. In fact, around 95 percent of all kidney stones are composed primarily of calcium. So obviously reducing our intake of calcium will help. But you will also need to increase your intake of magnesium and you will need to lower the acidity of your body.
Natural Treatments For Kidney Stones
If you have insurance and can afford it, have a urologist take a look at your kidneys to make sure they are healthy and stone free. If you have stones there are things you can do. If you do not have stones there are ways to prevent them.
These are natural things you can do for kidney stones. Now you may have kidney stones that are hanging out undetected in your kidneys. If so, you may need to undergo a medical procedure if you develop pain and the natural methods do not work fast enough.
I had an ultrasound performed on me at the beginning of the year. They found a 4 mm stone in my left kidney. I have never been bothered with my left kidney and there had never been a stone detected there. It had always been my right kidney that gave me a problem. In any event, this newly discovered stone is not causing me any pain. And I am using the stone breaker tea and bicarbonate of soda to try to get rid of it. I am due for another checkup in 6 months. I am interested to know if this stone breaker tea will get rid of it. YAH-willing this stone will be gone by my next birthday. I will keep you posted of the progress.
Peace and good health,
Food in the U.S. is probably some of the worst in the world when it comes to nutrition. It is contaminated with just about everything. That’s why cooking meals at home is so important. At least that way you can control some of what goes into your body. The problem is that we cannot always eat well when we are on the road or flying from place to place. So the question is what can we do to stay healthy when traveling.
I have given some thought to this and have listed some things you may want to consider packing in your bags as you prepare for that trip.Spirulina and Chlorella
According to Dr. Joel Wallach, mineral deficiencies are at the heart of every chronic degenerative disease. Colloidal minerals are a good way of replacing the minerals we lose. Our bodies can manufacture some vitamins but they cannot manufacture minerals. So you may want to consider taking a bottle of colloidal minerals on your next trip. Just dump an ounce into some lemon water and you are good to go. You can get colloidal minerals online or even at some health food stores. You can also get this product from Swanson Vitamins.
When going on a trip don’t be without bicarbonate of soda. It is good as a toothpaste and a deodorant. Even more important it can be used to soothe indigestion and as a nutritional supplement. Bicarbonate of soda increases your body’s pH level (neutralizes acid). It also drives magnesium (one of the most important minerals your body needs) deep into our cells where it is needed most. Take 1 teaspoon in 8 ounces of water. Twice a day.
Himalayan salt is something you also want to have in your travel bag, especially if you have high blood pressure. Take it with you to season your food. This kind of salt is actually good for you. In fact, it is one of the most nutritional salts you can buy. See this article for more information.
Cayenne tincture can come in mighty handy on a trip. It is a natural stimulant and is helpful in normalizing circulation. If you are feeling faint or need a quick pick me up, take a few drops of cayenne tincture. The stronger the better. Cayenne tincture has also been reported to stop heart attacks.
Milkthistle seed tincture is your liver’s best friend. Your liver’s job is to remove toxins from the body and to metabolize fat. Milkthistle seed tincture protects and helps support liver function. Take a dropperful of this tincture two times a day.
One other thing you may want to consider is taking some Epsom’s salt with you. I always like to take Epsom’s salts with me wherever I go. It’s a laxative and purgative. It is great for indigestion and for food poisoning. Follow label directions when taking it. I use it in conjunction with baking soda, if I am having severe bouts of indigestion.
Finally, there’s something else you should consider. When you visit restaurants, ask the server if your food can be prepared without salt. That way you can use your own salt. Also ask if the food is prepared using MSG (mono-sodium glutamate). MSG increases your appetite and fosters weight gain. In addition, always try to avoid anything that contains high fructose corn syrup or aspartame. High fructose corn syrup can lead to obesity and diabetes. Aspartame is used in diet foods and beverages just like high fructose corn syrup. It is a dangerous sweetener. Some researchers believe it to be the underlying cause of heart attacks in young people. For more on this sweetener see this article.
Cautionary note: You can probably get away with asking for special service at the high-end restaurants. However, try not to offend the chef or the server. Otherwise you may need to use your Epsom’s salt and baking soda sooner than later…I’m just saying…
So there you have it, some things that may help you on your travels.
Peace and safe travels,
P.S. I want to thank Michael and the brothers for giving me the idea for this article.
Diabetes--One Of The Quickest Diseases To Cure -- Part I
In my opinion and based on scientist evidence, diabetes is one of those diseases that should not be. That is to say, Type II diabetes or what is often referred to as adult onset diabetes. But Type II diabetes is a killer. And the number of people developing this disease is blowing up. However, there is hope for those who suffer from this disease or those who are at risk for it. The message here is that you will need to take your health into your hands if you want to get better. In this two-part series I want to cover this disease and its cure. I originally wrote this article for a another website, however I am updating it to incorporate additional research I have run across.
According to the National Diabetes Fact Sheet, approximately 8% of the U.S. population, or 26 million people, have diabetes. And 79 million people are prediabetic (blood sugar levels higher than normal). As you can see there are a lot of people who suffer from this disease or are at risk of developing it.
While most of us refer to diabetes as the sugar disease, diabetes mellitus (it’s technical name) is actually a group of diseases where blood sugar levels are elevated. They are elevated either because the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin, or because the body does not respond to insulin which is produced by the body. Elevated blood sugar levels produce the classic symptoms of diabetes- increased thirst, frequent urination, and increased hunger.
Type I diabetes refers to insulin-dependent diabetes where the body does not produce insulin. Type II diabetes, or insulin resistant diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes. In this type of diabetes the body fails to properly use insulin.
Diet and Diabetes–Start With the Simple Steps First
Other than through prescription drugs and insulin injections, the main avenue used to combat diabetes is diet. And what you refrain from eating is as important as what you do eat. For example, did you know that soft drinks are a major contributor to Type II diabetes? Studies conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical Schools found that the consumption of soda pop and other sugary drinks dramatically increase the odds of developing adult-onset diabetes (Type II diabetes).
The results of this study were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association back in 2004. Many scientists speculate that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) which is used as a sweetener in most soda pop today is responsible for this sudden increase in diabetes cases. HFCS wreaks havoc with our bodies. This unnatural sugar made from corn does not stimulate the body to produce insulin which means that there is no way for the body to know to absorb this sugar from the bloodstream. Thus, HFCS elevates glucose levels in the bloodstream.
I know there are studies out there that claim that soda (particularly diet soda) in moderation poises no major health hazard. I disagree. Aspartame which is found in most diet sodas is a excitotoxins—it destroys certain types of brain cells. So if you are diabetic, I would even stay away from diet soda.
Combating Diabetes Through Diet
I mentioned that you should stay away from soda pop and sugary drinks if you have diabetes. In addition, there are things you need to add to your diet to combat diabetes. The good news is that research has shown that diabetes may be the result of deficiencies of chromium, vanadium, magnesium, zinc, copper, biotin, vitamin D, niacin, coenzyme Q10 and manganese. So supplementing with these nutrients would be prudent. In addition, alpha lipoic acid, a natural antioxidant, has also been shown to help fight diabetes. Finally, studies have found that the spices ginger and cinnamon can lower blood sugar levels. In part two of this article I want to cover in greater detail how to use these supplements in order to get better. Until then...
It is written that the MessiYAH learned obedience through the things he suffered (Heb 5:8). At another place it is written that the MessiYAH was a man of sorrows who was acquainted with grief (Is. 53:3). And truly we know He has carried our sorrows and borne our grief. There is indeed something to say about suffering. Most of us do not like it. I know I don't, yet I know that if we follow Him, it must be (2 Tim 2:12 if we suffer we shall also reign with Him). I bring this up because I have lived long enough to know that even in suffering we learn some things about ourselves and about others.
I am not one of those people who bear up well under a lot of physical pain. I know that. But then I know some people who are sick, yet you would never know that they had any aches or pains because they never let it show through. I take my hat off to those people who I know or have known in my life that bore heavy burdens of pain but never let it keep them down. Now when I hurt really bad it generally shows on my face and in my actions. As my mother used to say, “when Ray is sick everyone's going to know it.” I become very reticent, lethargic and listless. When I was younger I would moan and groan or grunt when I got sick. Oh the pain! Oh the pain!. I would often exaggerate my hurt. As I got older I thought it not too macho to moan and groan, so I learned to buck up a bit and to be strong. But still I am not the same person when I ache(I am not my normal uncharming self).
Anyway, one of the worse physical pains I have ever felt was when I passed kidney stones. The pain was so excruciating I thought I would die. I have had a couple of episodes of kidney stones and they lasted 2-3 days. Rough, rough, rough. But through my suffering I decided that I did not want to feel that way again. It was one of those defining moments that brought me into this whole notion of natural healing. The other thing that drove the idea and practice of natural healing deep into my being was watching my mother and mother-in-law suffer the effects of cancer. Those events nearly sucked the life right out of me.
My mom was one of those people who was no stranger to pain. She bore 9 children and was always working around the house. Always. And I knew she was very ill even as a boy. She would throw-up at least two or three times a day. Every day. Even as a child I knew intuitively that something was wrong with my mother. I thought to myself, this is not normal, my mother is dying. And as I would watch her rush to the bathroom several times a day, I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. But mom was a trooper she kept right on going, until…
Until later in her life she developed that disease that most people are afraid of--cancer. It was the only disease that could keep her down. I still wince and tear up when I think of my mom in the hospital just writhing in pain and agony. A woman who never gave up, a woman who I never heard cry out, was suddenly mortal. And that ripped my heart out. She suffered from cancer and an inept medical system, and from so-called doctors, I called them charlatan, bent on making a fast buck off of suffering. My mother-in-law was the same way. So graceful in life while in the throes of pain, and just as graceful when she faced death.
Those two events and my on bout with kidney stones put me on a fast track to learn how to prevent or even cure my aches and pains through natural methods. That's what I mean about suffering. You can learn something from it.
Fasting For Health
Scripture talks quite a bit about fasting. I was able to find the word fasting at least 21 times in Scripture. A google search says that fasting or fast appears around 70 times in Scripture. When we see fasting mentioned in Scripture it usually has to do with repentance. Or it was a sign of grief or great distress. Moses and the MessiYAH fasted for 40 days and nights. I think fasting is good for the spirit and the soul. The Scriptures seem to suggest that to me. Fasting involves denying one's self to focus on the inner man or woman. It is kind of a spiritual purging. Fasting is indeed good for the soul but I also believe it is good for the body as well.
When I feel ill sometimes I do nothing, nothing but fast. I usually start early in the morning and I drink a large glass of water (usually water with a big squeeze of fresh lemons). I start with anywhere from 8 to 16 ounces of water. Then an hour or so later, I drink baking soda water -- 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to 4 ounces of water. Some people drink 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 8 ounces of water. Your preference. The key is to use baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) not baking powder. Around mid-morning I drink more lemon water.
Around noon, I like to drink 4 ounces of water with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Then around 3:00 PM I drink 8-16 ounces of lemon water. Then around 6 pm another 4 ounces of baking soda water. If you want to do this kind of fast, experiment to find out what works best for you. I sometimes drink well over a gallon of this lemon water mixture. It all depends on how bad I feel and how quickly I want to purge. The more you drink the more you will purge. Lemons are very alkaline. This means they neutralize acid in the body. Acid buildup in our bodies is one of the chief causes of disease. Baking soda does the same thing. It quickly neutralizes acidity, and raises the pH of blood.
There are times when I go on a 24 hour fast, or sometimes I fast from sun-up to sundown. There are days that I fast with water and just fresh fruit. The longest fast I have done lasted 5 days. It was a juice fast. The first two days were kind of tough but after that it wasn't so bad.
The thing is try it and see if it doesn't make you feel better. As I said earlier, experiment with it to see what works best for you. A simple water fast can be very detoxifying. It will give your digestive system a break from breaking down solid foods. Have you ever watched sick animals in the wild, or your own pets if you have any. When they get sick they will stop eating.
So remember to go out and get you a bag of lemons. And make sure you are hoarding plenty of baking soda. It will become your emergency medicine when things go bad. It is even good for fighting radiation poisoning. So be sure to stock up now. The best place I have seen to get it in bulk is Amazon. If you know of a better place let me know. I stick with Arm and Hammer brand baking soda and only get the kind for internal use.
Peace and good health,
