JUICING FOR HEALTH AND FITNESS

JUICING FOR HEALTH AND FITNESS!

Part I

Juicing is one of the fastest, easiest and most delicious way to get the nutrients your body needs for health and beauty. Several years ago I introduced four women in my office to with fruits, vegetables, and herbs. I did this because I’d overheard them complaining about being overweight and tired all the time. I believed their afflictions stemmed from an unhealthy lifestyle. So I asked them to do me a favor and go on a juice program. I told them they would also need to restrict their intake of refined sugar and meat. That is, if they wanted to see the best and quickest results.

What do I mean by restricting intakes of meat and refined sugar? To keep it simple, if you know you eat a lot of meat and sweets try to cut your normal intake in half. So if you normally eat 3 pieces of chicken at a seating, just eat one or two pieces. If you feel hungry, eat more fruits or cooked and raw vegetables. If you have a sweet tooth, try eating deserts that are sweet but healthy like fruit or fruit smoothies. In addition, be sure to stay away from foods that contain MSG, aspartame, and high fructose corn syrup. These additives are deadly. The problem is you will find them in almost everything that is commercially prepared. So read label ingredients carefully. Almost all soda pop now contains high fructose corn syrup. You’ll even find it in cookies and desserts now.

If you must have dessert, cook it yourself using natural ingredients such as raw sugar, stevia (a natural sweetener that I will discuss at length in a future post), and spices. Experiment and make home cooking fun. It may cost a little more to buy some of these natural ingredients, but it’s your health we’re talking about. And seriously, what is your health worth?

Anyway, back to my story. Once these ladies began juicing, within two weeks they began to look and feel better. Their skin began to radiate a youthful glow. Some looked ten years younger. And one of the first results you will notice once you begin your juice program is the appearance of younger-looking, more vibrant skin. Soon the word got out around the office and the secret was out. It seemed almost everyone wanted to give juicing a try.

One older lady, who was a friend of one of my office mates, heard about what we were doing and began her own juice program. She mainly juiced apples, some carrots and cabbage. She lost almost 70 pounds in less than a year and came off of insulin. She had gotten to the point where she was so sick and tired of being sick and tired that she did something about it. Isn’t it amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it!

How Juicing Helps the Body

Juicing fruits, vegetables and herbs does three main things for your body:

It detoxifies the body of harmful substances.

It gives your digestive system a break from having to break down meats and tough fiber which allows it to rebuild and repair itself.

It saturates the body’s cells with healing nutrition.

When you juice organic fruits and vegetables you use all the parts of the plants—the stems, the rind, the leaves, etc. This means that you are getting a very high percentage of the nutrients contained in the plant. This includes vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other phytochemical that you would not otherwise get if you ate the whole plant. That’s because when you eat the whole plant the indigestible fiber in the plant prevents your body from getting at the minerals contained within this fiber. In addition to helping your body utilize nutrients it would not otherwise be able to get at, juicing allows you to consume more fruits and vegetables in general. I mean, I don’t know many people who can eat 5 whole carrots, 2 apples, and 2 celery stalks at one time. However, most people can drink 12-16 ounces of its equivalent in juice.

As I mentioned before, juicing drenches the cells in your body with health-giving vitamins and minerals. In addition, it provides an abundance of enzymes. Enzymes are needed by your body to create and regulate numerous body functions including regulating hormones, initiating cell metabolism, aiding in digestion, and creating complex chemical reactions throughout the body. Without enzymes our body could not function.

Juicing produces copious amounts of "live" enzymes, the kind your body needs. However, the thing about enzymes that you must remember is that they are very sensitive to heat and air. Too much of either quickly destroys them. That’s one of the reasons buying processed, bottled juices fruit and vegetable juices is such a waste. Most of these products are pasteurized (heated above 200 degrees), which destroys vital enzymes and some vitamins as well. Most enzymes cannot tolerate heat above approximately 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Part II

Getting Started

Juicing is not rocket science. All you need are a good quality juicer and access to fresh fruit and vegetables. As far as the actual juice machine is concerned, I recommend that you purchase a juicer with a pulp ejector. A pulp ejector separates the juice from the fiber dispersing the pulp out of one side, and the juice the other side. If you don’t get a machine with a pulp-ejector you will need to stop frequently to remove the pulp from the machine which can become a colossal waste of time. Other than that, get a machine that fits in your budget and is of good quality. The better brands are Juiceman, Champion, L’Equip, Jack La Lane, and Omega. A good-quality juicer will more than pay for itself during its first year of use. The dividends will be beautiful skin and more vibrant health.

HINTS ON JUICING:

Always juice vegetables and fruits separately. Vegetables require different digestive enzymes than fruit, so to make it easy on the digestive system and to make the nutrients easier to assimilate, consume fruit and vegetable juices at least two hours apart. The only exception to this is apples. Apples may be juiced with any vegetable. They help to make certain vegetable juices palatable.

When drinking vegetable juices, swish them around in your mouth first. This prepares your digestive system for the incoming juices. Thus, your stomach begins to secrete the enzymes necessary to breakdown the nutrients contained in the juice. In addition, here is a little secret that will help you better assimilate the nutrients in your juice. When consuming vegetable juices add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the juice. Cayenne stimulates circulation and is considered a catalyst that improves absorption of vital nutrients.

Eat fruits and drink your vegetables. This is my rule for juicing. Unless you are on an elimination diet, drink no more than 16 oz. of juice each day. Fruits should be eaten fresh and organic where possible. Fruits are very eliminative and are great for cleaning out your system when eaten raw.

When consuming green juices such as wheatgrass, barley, alfalfa, asparagus, and Brussels sprout always mix them with apple or carrot juice(apple preferably) and drink no more than 2 ounces of the green juice at a time. For example, when drinking wheatgrass juice only juice 2 ounces at a time, then add 6 ounces of apple juice to give you a total of 8 ounces of juice.

Always buy certified organic fruits and vegetables where possible. If you purchase fruits and vegetables which are not organic, you will need to wash them with a special fruit/vegetable rinse found in most health food stores. Otherwise, you will to peel the skins of the fruits or shave the skin off the vegetables (carrots for instance).

Here are four of my favorite recipes. Remember to thoroughly washed produce especially rinds. Also, in recipes that call for garlic cloves, I am referring to cloves (the small sections that are contained in the garlic bulb once you peel the skin off).
